If your PC or Laptop is running slowly, before you do anything else you should always run a Defrag. You will be astonished just how much this can speed up your Computer. In Windows XP you can find the Disk Defragmenter tool from Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
In Windows Vista, and Windows 7, Defrag will automatically run according to a schedule.
